As useful as iTunes can be when it comes to iOS data management, every so often you're likely to experience some sort of issues. Whether iTunes doesn't recognize your device or you're simply struggling to sync your iPhone properly, it's not uncommon for iTunes users to experience these types of problems. In this article, the error that we are going to be discussing is iTunes error 17 – a troubling error that recently a lot of iTunes users have come face-to-face with. Typically, this error is a result of a connection problem although regardless of what the issue is, we're going to discuss some of the different ways that you can try and fix this problem.

Solution 1. Update Your iTunes Version

Having an outdated version of iTunes installed on your computer could result in iTunes error 17, and in order to prevent any iTunes issues like this from occurring, your best bet is to keep iTunes updated by regularly launching it and checking for updates.

Whenever you launch iTunes, a notification will likely appear alerting you that an iTunes update is available. Of course, if you use iTunes daily then this won't always be the case. However, there is typically an iTunes update at least once a week and by keeping up to date with the versions that are released, you can stay ahead of any errors.

Solution 2. Method Check Your Anti-Virus Software and Firewall

Connection issues aren't uncommon with iPhones, and similarly, iTunes has been known to be problematic if any connection issues arise. The odds are that if you've been using iTunes without any hassle for a few months or even years without any problems, this isn't the issue and you can move on to the next solution that we have detailed below.

Anti-virus software will generally handle your firewall (the extra security that is added to your computer to prevent malicious files from being transferred through the internet), and every so often, it's going to mistake a safe file for a harmful one. You can test to see if your anti-virus software is the problem by simply disabling it for a few minutes, launching iTunes, and checking whether or not the iTunes error 17 persists – if it does, try something else.

Solution 3. Check Your Network Connection

Following on from what we said above, the network connection issue that's interfering with your iTunes connection and causing this error could be from your router.

Even if you are on your computer constantly working or playing games, you have to turn it off for a while and give it a break – most people do this at night while they sleep. Similarly, your router should be turned off and back on at least once a week to prevent it from overheating or becoming overworked.

Solution 4. Check the Host's Files

Host files are another common reason for iTunes struggling to complete tasks. In order to fix host files that are being problematic all you have to do is close iTunes, delete the files, and launch it again. This will redownload the files and ensure that they are intact.

On a Windows PC.

Checking the host files on a Windows computer can be difficult as the method for doing so depends on the version of Windows that is installed. For more information on how to go about checking and deleting the host files, read this article.

On a Mac Computer.

On a Mac computer it is significantly easier to fix iTunes error 17 if the issue is with the host files as all Mac computers can use the same method.

Step #1 – Open a “Finder” window, select “Applications”, and then click on “Utilities”.

Step #2 – Next, open up a “Terminal” and enter “sudo nano/private/etc/hosts”, followed by clicking the “Return” key.

Step #3 – You will be prompted to enter your Mac password, so go ahead and do so.

Step #4 – The host's files will now be shown and using the arrow keys, search for the file called “gs.apple.com”.

Step #5 – Change the name of this file by adding an extra letter or a “#” to the beginning of it, and press CTRL+O to save the change.

Step #6 – To exit the terminal simply click on CTRL+X.

Step #7 – Restart your computer, connect your iPhone, and you should no longer experience the iTunes error 17.

Using the built-in terminal feature can be quite scary considering how complicated it looks, but if you follow our steps accordingly, you shouldn't have any problems.

Solution 6. Updating Your iPhone With No Data Loss with iMyFone D-Back

Another situation where you might have to deal with the iTunes error 17 is when you're trying to use iTunes to update your iPhone's iOS version. Even though there is a built-in iOS feature that makes it easy to update your iOS version, it's much more convenient to do so with your computer, and fortunately, you can use iMyFone D-Back to update your iOS version.

This program works slightly different to iTunes and offers a range of different features. For the guide below, we are going to be using the “Standard Mode” feature.

Step #1 – Start off by downloading iMyFone D-Back to your computer, installing it, and launching it.

Step #2 – If you haven't already done so then go ahead and connect your iPhone using the appropriate USB cable.

Step #3 – Using the panel on the left, click on “Fix iOS System“. From here you will be shown the different options – click on “Standard Mode“.

Step #4 – You will now be prompted by the program to enter your iPhone into either “DFU Mode” or “Recovery Mode“. A guide will be shown on-screen to show you how to do this.

Step #5 – Once you've put your device into either of these modes, you'll be asked to enter some basic information about the connected iPhone. Take your time and enter the information that has been requested.

Step #6 – Click on the “Download” button to have the new firmware downloaded and after it has been downloaded, simply click on the “Start to Fix” button and you're done.

This is another great way to get around iTunes error 17, and the best part is that “Standard Mode” will retain all of the data that is stored on your device! That being said, if you choose to use “Advanced Mode”, all of your data will be removed before the new firmware is installed. With this method, iMyFone D-Back will manually retrieve the selected iOS version from Apple servers, download it, and install it onto your iPhone just like iTunes would.
